A stump is what stops the mower, the fence post and the foundation. On a yard or a lot that keeps its grade, stumps are ground six to twelve inches below the surface and the hole is filled with the chips; on a lot being cleared for construction, they are pulled with the roots so the pad can be compacted. Stumps on Spartanburg County ground
